Greek Shooting In The Olympic Games

From 1896 to 2008, we have a total of 141 participations in 22 events from 97 Greek Shooters. There was no participation of our Shooters in the Olympic Games of 1900, 1904, 1928 and 1932. Greek Shooters have won 10 Medals (1-7-2). The only gold medal was wan by Pantelis Karasevdas, in 1896 at Military Rifle at 200m. He was just 19 years old. Was born in Astakos. He was a lawyer and served as a Member of the Parliament. He died in 1946 at the age of 69 years old.

After the war, Shooting has not changed substantially, but the way athletes prepare for the Games changed completely. The best Greek success achieved in this period was by John Koutsis (OFKO), who in the Trap of the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 ranked sixth with a performance of 187/200.

The full table of the Greek participations in the Olympic Games is as follows:

It is our obligation to the Greek Shooting facts to note that the biggest Greek success was achieved by a sniper who did not fight with our colors.

Michalis Diamantis was a Gold Medalist at Trap in 1996 in Atlanta as well as in 2000 in Sidney, who competed with the colors of Australia and the name Michael Diamond. When he won his first title in 1996 he was 24 years old and was working as a clerk at a liquor store at the city Goulburn. At the Trap he broke 149 plates over 147 of the second athlete. He dedicated his victory to his father, Leonidas, who had introduced him to Shooting from a very young age. In 2000 in Sydney, although his father had died just 3 months before the games, he was able to overcome the shock and to have 147 hits over 142 of the second. In Sydney we talked with his black dressed mother, who was close to him during the competition. From her we learned that her son wanted to play only with the colors of Australia. In the pre-games of Australia, for the selection of the team to compete in the Games in Athens in 2004, he did not participate because his competing license was removed from him by the Federation of the country for a serious misconduct. Shortly before the Games, the sentence was overturned and Diamantis attended the Games. But the psychological conditions did not help him. He had only 119 plates, against 149 of the winner and finished in 7th place tied with 5 other athletes.
